1948- The US launched a V2 rocket with a rhesus monkey named Albert 1 this mission failed.

 

1957- The soviet russians launched the first manmade object into space; the Sputnik 1. This was an unmanned satellite, with a dog named Laika. This was the first official man made object in space and the first animal in space.

 

1961- Yuri Gagarin launched in the Vostok 1 and was the first person in space.

 

1961- Alan Shepard became the first american in space. He was aboard the freedom 7.

 

1963- Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space aboard the Vostok 6.

 

1969- Nasa sent the Apollo 11 to the moon. On board was Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins.

 

1971- The Mariner 9 was launched and successfully landed on mars

 

1972-  The space shuttle program began.

 

1981- First space shuttle launch.

2011- Space shuttle program ended.
